The Rede of the Wiccae

Being known as the counsel of the Wise Ones: Bide the Wiccan laws ye must, in perfect love and perfect trust. Live and let live, fairly take and fairly give. Cast the Circle thrice about to keep the evil spirits out.

To bind the spell every time, let the spell be spake in rhyme. Soft of eye and light of touch, speak little, listen much.  Deosil go by the waxing Moon, sing and dance the Wiccan run. Widdershins go when the moon doth wane, and the Werewolf howls by the dread Wolfsbane.

When the Lady’s Moon is new, kiss thy hand to Her times two. When the Moon rides at Her peak then your heart’s desire seek. Heed the Northwind’s mighty gale; lock the door and drop the sail.

When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss thee on the mouth. When the wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast. When the West wind blows o’er thee, departed spirits restless be.

Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them quick a’ burn them slow. Elder be ye Lady’s tree; burn it not or cursed ye’ll be. When the Wheel begins to turn, let the Beltane fires burn. When the Wheel has turned at Yule, light the log and let Pan rule.

Heed ye flower bush and tree, by the Lady Bless’d Be. Where the rippling waters go cast a stone and truth ye’ll know. When find that ye have need, hearken not to others’ greed. With the fool no season spend or be counted as his friend.

Merry meet and merry part, bright the cheeks and warm the heart. Mind the  Threefold Law ye should, three times bad and three times good. When misfortune is enow, wear the Blue Star on thy brow. True in love ever be unless thy lover’s false to thee.

Eight words ye Wiccan Rede fulfill: An’ it harm none, do what ye will.

The Great Rite

Assist me to erect the ancient altar

At which in days past all worshipped

The great altar of all things

For in times of old, woman was the altar

Thus was the altar made and placed

And the sacred place was the point within the center of the circle

As we have of old been taught

That the point within the center is the origin of all things

Therefore should we adore it

Therefore whom we adore we also invoke

O circle of stars

Whereof our Father is but the younger brother

Marvel beyond imagination, soul of infinite space

Before whom time is ashamed

The mind bewildered, and the understanding dark

Not unto thee may we attain unless thine image be love

Therefore by seed and root, and stem and bud

And leaf and flower and fruit, do we invoke thee

O Queen of Space, O Jewel of Light

Continuous One of the Heavens

Let it be ever thus

That man speak not of thee as One, but as None

And let them not speak of thee at all

Since thou art continuous

For thou art the point within the Circle, which we adore

The point of life without which we would not be

And in this way truly are erected the holy pillars

In beauty and in strength were they erected

To the wonder and glory of all men

Altar of mysteries manifold, the sacred circle’s secret point

Thus do I sign thee as old, with kisses of my lips anoint

Open for me the secret way, the pathway of intelligence

Beyond the gates of night and day, beyond the bounds of time and sense

Beyond the mysteries aright, the five true points of fellowship

Here where the Lance and Grail unite

And feet, and knees, and breast, and lip

~  The Witches Way by Stewart and Janet Farrar, 1984 ~

Traditional Great Rite

When performed in a more formal or traditional way, which is also a long version of the rite, the Priestess lays down and a veil is placed over her. The Priest kneels at her feet and a female circle member brings the athamé from the altar and stands by the Priestess and a male member brings the chalice and stands on the opposite side of the Priestess.  This symbolizes woman as the altar, as the place where all magick and creation springs from.  The Priest then recites an invocation which begins with several lines which express this:

“Assist me to erect the ancient altar, at which in days past all worshipped; The altar of all things. For in old time, Woman was the altar. Thus was the altar made and placed, And the sacred place was the point within the center of the Circle.  As we have of old been taught that the point within the centre is the origin of all things, Therefore should we adore it; Therefore whom we adore we also invoke.”

After the full invocation (as written above), the Priest then removes the veil, handing it to the female who then hands him the athamé.  The Priestess then rises to her knees so she is kneeling before the High Priest and she is given the chalice.  The Priest then continues the invocation:

“Altar of mysteries manifold, The sacred Circle’s secret point Thus do I sign thee as of old, With kisses of my lips anoint.”

The Priest kisses the Priestess on the lips and continues:

“Open for me the secret way, The pathway of intelligence, Beyond the gates of night and day, Beyond the bounds of time and sense. Behold the mystery aright The five true points of fellowship.”

The Priestess then holds up the chalice and the Priest lowers the point of the athamé into the chalice which is commonly filled with red wine (different groups will use different liquids such as mead, while some will use water as it is considered to be one of the most sacred liquids of all).

The Priestess says:

“Here where Lance and Grail unite, And feet, and knees, and breast, and lip.”

The Priest gives the athamé to the female covener and then places both his hands around the hands of the Priestess as she holds the chalice and then kisses her and she sips from the cup.  In turn she kisses him and he then sips, all the while both keep their hands together holding the chalice.  The Priest then takes the chalice and they both stand.  Then the Priest will begin the passing of the chalice.  In a traditional coven, where all acts are done male to female and female to male, the Priest will start this by passing the chalice to the a female in circle with a kiss and then she to a male with a kiss and so on until the chalice comes back to the Priest.

Next the cakes or bread are consecrated, which is done by the male and female members who assisted in the wine blessing.  The woman takes the athamé, the man the dish, and he kneels before her holding the dish up to her.  She then draw an earth invoking pentagram over the dish while the man says:

“O Queen most secret, bless this food into our bodies; bestowing health, wealth, strength, joy and peace, and that fulfillment of love that is perfect happiness.”

The Athamé is placed on the altar and the woman takes the dish and, with a kiss passes it to the man, then he passes it back with a kiss, and then the woman begins the passing of the cakes, by giving the dish to another male in the circle with a kiss.

Traditional Great Rite in Truth

The above is the rite in token.  The rite in truth changes at the point where the Priestess  to her knees.  After the invocation is said by the Priest, all other members will either leave the room, in some cases they simply turn their backs to give some privacy to the Priest and Priestess in the center of the circle and they face outward and the Priestess remains laying down.  The Priest recites another piece of the invocation and then kisses the Priestess in the sign of the Third Degree (according to the public Gardnerian version of the rite).  The next portion of invocation includes the following verse:

“Foot to foot.  Knee to knee.  Lance to grail.  Breast to breast.  Lips to lips.”

At the point where the Priest says “Lance to grail”, if this section is used in the rite in token, the Athamé would be placed in the chalice.  If the rite is being done in truth, this would be the point of physical union.

Now, this is very much a traditional Wiccan method of doing this and is the publicly know version that is often said to be Gardnerian in nature.  This  version specifically comes from Janet and Stewart Farrar’s, The Witches’ Bible Complete.

Drawing Down the Moon

All ye assembled at mine shrine, Mother Darksome and Divine.

Mine the Scourge and mine the Kiss, Here I charge you in this sign.

All you assembled in my sight, Bow before my spirit bright.

Aphrodite, Arianhod, Lover of the Horned God.

Mighty Queen of Witchery and night,

Morgan, Erione, Nisene, Diana, Brighid, Melusine,

Am I named of old by men, Artemis and Cerridwen,

Hell’s dark mistress, Heaven’s Queen.

Ye who ask of me a rune, Or would ask of me a boon,

Meet me in some secret glade, Dancing round in greenwood shade.

By the light of the Full Moon.

In a place wild and lone, Dance about mine altar stone,

Work my holy mystery, Ye who are feign to sorcery.

I bring ye secrets yet unknown.

No more shall ye know slavery, who give true worship unto me.

Ye who tread my round on Sabbat night,

come ye naked to my rite, in token that ye be really free.

I teach ye the mystery of rebirth, work ye my mysteries in mirth.

Heart joined to heart and lip to lip,

five are the points of fellowship,

that bring ye ecstasy on earth,

for I am the circle of rebirth.

I ask no sacrifice, but do vow,

no other Law but love I know,

By naught but love may I be known.

All things living are mine own,

from me they come, to me they go.

I invoke Thee and call upon Thee Mighty Mothers of us all.

Bringer of Fruitfulness by seed and by root.

I invoke Thee by stem and bud.

I invoke Thee by life and love

and call upon Thee to descend into the body

of this Thy Priestess and Servant.

Hear with her ears, speak with her tongue,

touch with her hands, kiss with her lips,

that thy servants may be fulfilled.

A Drink from the Scarlet’s Chalice

“I am the dowghter of fortitude & ravyshed every howr, from my youth, for behold, I am understanding & science dwelleth in me & the hevens oppress me, They covet an desyre me with infinite appetite few or none that are erthly have embraced me, for I am shadowed with the circle of the sonne; and covered with the morning clouds: My feet are swifter that the wynds & my hands are sweter than the morning dew.”

Babalon is The Great Mother, the Mother of Abominations, the Sacred Whore, the Mother of Harlots, she is Mystery, she is the Scarlet Woman.

“This is how Babalon works, the destruction of morality and the release of psychosexual energy into mystical illumination.” pg 108 Peter Grey’s The Red Goddess

The lurid and provocative descriptions of the Red Goddess have helped me form a more concrete image of the goddess symbols in my own workings. You see, coming more from the heart than from the head, The Red Goddess is not just Grey’s devotion to the Scarlet Woman, it is itself a talisman. If nothing else it is challenging, uncompromising, sarcastic and insightful, and at times downright funny, but always providing the clear message, “Let Go“!

Babalon is Rising! Babalon “is a power that comes out of the past and resonates into the now with the compelling song of the witch woman. She is both the primal form of the Goddess from the far distant past and the most modern icon of post-human style” (p2). His passion for the Holy Whore shines through on each page.

The call to Babalon is key in present day. It is essential in reclaiming female power. Of course, women can’t flock to temples and set up camp as Holy Whores in this day and age without being arrested, but a definite change in the way women see themselves, and in the way men see women, would be a start. Every woman can invoke the Holy Whore into her life with pleasure. The Sacred Prostitute is a woman who has reclaimed herself and has reconnected with her will. Most importantly, she is a woman who has reclaimed the sacredness of her body.

InLore                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Enochian is a name applied to an occult or angelic language recorded in the private journals of Dr. John Dee and his seer Edward Kelley in the late 16th century. The men claimed that it was revealed to them by angels. Some contemporary scholars of magic consider it a constructed language. It is believed, by some, to be the only way to communicate with the Scarlet Woman. Aleister Crowley conducted invocations using the Enochian System of Magick that led to his book, The Vision and The Voice, consisting of chronicals of his mystical journey.

In Crowley’s, Book of Lies, he dedicated chapter 49 called ‘Waratah Blossoms’ to Babalon.

Seven are the veils of the dancing-girl in the harem of IT.  Seven are the names, and seven are the lamps beside Her bed. Seven eunuchs guard Her with drawn swords; No Man may come nigh unto Her.  In Her wine-cup are seven streams of the blood of the Seven Spirits of God. Seven are the heads of THE BEAST whereon She rideth. The head of an Angel: the head of a Saint: the head of a Poet: the head of An Adulterous  Woman: the head of a Man of Valour: the head of a Satyr: and the head of a Lion-Serpent. Seven letters hath Her holiest name; and it is This is the Seal upon the Ring that is on the Fore-finger of IT: and it is the Seal upon the Tombs of them whom She hath slain. Here is Wisdom.  Let Him that hath Understanding count the Number of Our Lady; for it is the Number of a Woman; and Her Number is An Hundred and Fifty and Six.

Who is to drink of the Chalice of Ecstacy? The Whore, Babalon, shares her sacred elixir with all who dare savor its hidden delights through the purity of heart and transparency of soul. For me, the Chalice of Ecstasy is the fruit of the Tree of Initiation. I drink the nectar of transformation.

The day when BABALON reaches for me, She will touch a place which is not quite flesh. This place is fluid and constantly changing. She will push me over the edge and I will fly to meet Her. In that moment, I will have felt the yielding of myself to a force which is a part of me but which I cannot quite grasp. I will allow myself the freedom to be exactly who I am without fear of disapproval.  BABALON will reinforce the strength that I sometimes forget I have. She will enhance the Woman-Essence that is me. She will help me experience some of the more hidden and shadowy parts of myself: my creativity, my sexuality, my anger but also my joy, love and celebration of living on the Earth.

Hear the charge of the Goddess, “To Me! To Me!”  As she beckons to those who wish to be free; Calling Her children from hither and yon! I raise up the cup and adore Babalon!  ~ In Nomine Babalon: 156 Adorations to the Scarlet Goddess

I’ve been hearing whispers, and although I cannot make out the words, I feel the weight of their importance. Soon, She will roar through me. Soon my words will be Her words. Soon, there will be only Her.

Babalon Rising!

Each Individual Light

The brightness of the singular lights

Afloat through time & space

Entering through experience & thought

Along the paths of chosen moments

Cross they may or travel far distances

Amidst the winds and songs

With guidance of the God & Goddess

Intuition, Light and Love

These individual rays of colored lights

Though different from one another

They hold a common bond uniting

Shinning bright and sparkling throughout

Each one brings a gift to share

A precious token, a word, a will

Their long traveled roads have come to this moment

They meet at the base of the Tree of Life

In a circle of bright-colored lights they reside

Now blended as one in sacred synchronicity

To share the new road of divine & unity

Is our circle of each individual light

The Union

Bare feet carry her as she walks every morning

Smelling the dewy freshness brought forth in the spring

She listens to birds as she travels through the forest

And the rustle of leaves, and the wind of the west

The trickle of water draws near

For the creek is what has brought her here

Her reflection is that of a fair skin lady’s face

Strawberry golden hair graces her with an embrace

The young maiden’s beauty is a breath-taking sight

Any man would move mountains, but she awaits her true knight

As she admires the trees and the flowers around

She suddenly hears a faraway sound

Startled and standing, she looks left and right

She looks up, around, but nobody’s in sight

The animals are still there, the birds sing their songs

She knows this is exactly where she belongs

Her dreams of that day when her true love returns

Cause her great happiness & sadness; she yearns

She is lost in her thoughts, in a trance state-of-mind

That she doesn’t notice someone stands right behind

A hand caresses her shoulder ever so gently

She is startled, jumps to her feet, and looks quite intently

Her voice escapes her as she clenches her chest

Her eyes shed a tear, thumping heart doesn’t rest

Their embrace never-ending, this just couldn’t be wrong

Enraptured bodies entwined with one another

Exploding their senses as they pleasure each other

Their union is art that decorates the start of spring

Pastures green, flowers bloom, there is beauty in everything

Prince and Princess join together and with their passion, entertain

I now send blessings to you all as we celebrate Beltane!

Dragon Cave Meditation

Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth as you find a comfortable position, close your eyes breathing deeply once more, allow your body to relax, each exhale serves to release the tension in your body. Breathe deeper still as you sink into yourself….

You begin your journey lying peacefully in an open plain, the wind begins to blow, and suddenly the world turns black. You find yourself at the foot of a giant mountain. Looking up you see the stars above you, it is night-time in this place. You begin to make your way up the side of the mountain. Breathing in the sites before you, for this world is not your own. You find yourself at the entrance to a cave, the wind blows forcefully through you and into the mouth of the cavern. “Enter, and know the Truth,” says a Voice from within the mountain.

You begin to make your way into the mountainside cave. The entrance is long and windy, and you no longer know if you are going up or down. As you make your way to the end, a cavern opens up before you. The ceiling is high and the floor rough, but warm. In front of you stands a pedestal holding a single flame that illuminates the room. To your left there is a hidden hot spring, to the right an opening that leads to a tunnel that runs both upwards and downwards, the air blowing through here is clean and strong and it ventilates the entire room. There is a subtle fragrance in the air that permeates the cavern and there are hundreds of cave entrances along the walls.

You stand in silence at the center of the room, allowing the atmosphere to settle. Breathing deep of the fragrance and allowing yourself to sink deeper into this space. Allow your mind to open and free itself of any expectations, see the space for what it truly is and thank the dragons for inviting you into their homes. When you are ready state your intent loudly and clearly, allow some time to pass before inviting them into your presence, and when you do…just breathe.

When your dragon arrives, thank them for their presence, allow them to feel you, smell you and look at you. Feel no fear and breathe deeper still.

What does your dragon look like?

How do they smell, are they small, or large?

Male or female?

When you have become energetically acquainted introduce yourself to your dragon. Tell them your name, and share something personal with them, a silly story about yourself, a sad moment in your life, a secret that you have never spoken aloud to anyone…

Whatever it be that arises, let them see YOU.

When you are done, ask if they are willing to share their name with you, and wait. Remember to breathe and know that as long as you are there you are building a connection to you dragon.

After you have introduced yourselves allow your dragon to show you their home within the cavern, ask them questions and give them time to answer, ask then to give you an indication if they find something to be unacceptable, remember, you are building a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. If they ask something of you, answer honestly.

(Allow time for integration in this space)

When the time is right, and you are ready, say your farewells and thank your dragon once more for inviting you into their sacred space, if you made any promises, assure them that you will remember to keep them. Allow them time to depart before taking your leave and make your way out of the cavern into the winding tunnel, relish in your encounter and let that serve as your driving force as you make your way out of the cave. As you head back down the mountain side you look up to see the sun rising swiftly, and get one last look at your dragon along the horizon. The wind begins to blow strongly once more and your vision goes black, you awake in your own body, refreshed and clear. When you are ready, take a nice deep breath, open your eyes, and don’t forget to smile.

Dark Goddess Meditation

Breathe deep the scent of the ocean.

The eternal abyss.

Breathe deep the starlit skies.

The never-ending void

Breathe deep the love your Self, of sisters and those who have come before.

The womb of our Mother.

Breathe deep the Moonlight, our most Holy of Guides.

As you stand at the shoreline, you know you are safe.

You take one step into the incoming tide, and feel the water splash around your ankles. Another step and another still, until you are completely immersed within the Ocean embrace.

Water fills your lungs as you begin to get sucked down to the very bottom of these dark waters. Deeper you go…dreaming in emptiness.

A voice calls to you from the watery depths, “Release these things that hold you back and immerse yourself in the Goddess.”

You find that you are able to breathe and before you stands the entrance to a cave hidden beneath the waters…Before entering the cavern the Voice calls to you once more, “What is your name? For your name itself holds power…Do not forget your name.”

As you make your way into the cavern the water slowly recedes. You find yourself emerging into an enclave with many doors in crescent moon formation. Sparkling stalactites hang precariously overhead. The soft trickle of water droplets collect in a small dark pool at the center of this room, separating you from the doors that lie ahead. Slowly you make your way to this pool, “To go up one must first go down”, you kneel and see your reflection within the black waters.

What do you look like? What do you want to look like…. what do you really look like?

“Your purpose” demands the Voice from the abyss.

“Why do you seek Us in Our Halls?”

“What can We teach you that you cannot learn yourself?”

The pool begins to quake and the doors open forcefully, shaking with power.

“Why have you come?” asks a voice from one of the doors. “What makes you think you are worthy?” asks another. “Who is She who dares stand before Me?” says a third. “How was Her price paid?” . . . One by one a woman emerges from each of the doorways.

Robed in feathers and pearls…in blood and in satin…in wool They come. Some, stand naked before you, primal and refined, hungry and satiated, in unison They say, We are that which the light has hidden. We are They who have known you since birth. We are She who will destroy you, and from Our hands, create you once more. Now what is it you fear?

As you step forward, you are approached by the Goddesses. One by one, spend time with as many as you see fit.

(allow time for your personal journey to manifest)

When it is time, and you are ready, saw your farewells. Remember, these are your Mothers, your Grandmothers, Ancestors and daughters that have yet to come. See within Them the reflection of that which has always been and ever will be.

“Return.” , calls the Voice, “Return, Return, Return”

As you make your journey back to the world of Light you reflect on the things you have seen, heard, and spoken. You are armed now, and ready. The choice is yours. You have stood before the Dark Goddess in Her many forms.

“Return, Return, Return…for She will always be within you.”

You float blissfully up to the surface, collected and empowered. You have come face to face with She who is You, as only a Woman can be.

Creatrix and Destroyer. Mother of Rebirth.

Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to come fully back into your body…When ready, take a deep breath, open your eyes and smile.

The Charge of the Dark God

Heed my voice which will come to you as the thunder on the wind for I am thy Lord of Darkness, The Dark God, the Stag Lord, Whisper my name: Cernunnos.

I am the sleeping dawn, the twilight, the dark of night that covers the Heavens above you and beckons the Star Goddess to shine.

I am the final end that comes so that life may flourish, Behold, I am Immortality; The living die and the Dead are soon reborn.

I can see your inner darkness; the dark side of the soul; The hearts desperate yearning.

Step into the Empire of Darkness, and Come to me boldly and without fear; For I am he that protects and leads you; I am the echo of the forest; I am the evening sky and the autumn storm; I am the passion within you.

I am the hunter and the seeker of Enlightenment. I stand in Light’s Darkness and am called Shadow, I am He whom you have named Death. I call forth to thee and bid you step forward.

Come with me into the darkness; Fear me not. Feel my love and caresses and you will be transformed. We will fly upon the winds together.

My Beloved Children, I am your destiny, come to Me and learn the secrets of all that’s Holy, the secrets of life and death.

Come! Dance for me! Come! Sing for me! With Love in your hearts and a smile for me, Behold! This is the way to worship and best please me.

Call out to me on the moonless night and seek me out with pride and courage for this is my true love. I love not the wailing or frightened. For I am the Dark Warrior, The Protector, and the Giver of Courage,

Send me your love when the sky is darkest, and I will smile, but will not kiss thee; For my kiss is eternal; It is the Kiss of Death and I do love thee so.

The Charge of the Dark Goddess

The Dark Goddess speaks to us, through the mouths of Lillith, Kali, Tiamet, Hekate, Nix, the Black Madonna, Nemesis and Morgane.

I am the Darkness behind and beneath the shadows.

I am the absence of air that awaits at the bottom of every breath.

I am the Ending before Life begins again,

the decay that fertilizes the living.

I am the bottomless pit,

the never-ending struggle to reclaim that which is denied.

I am the Key that unlocks every door.

I am te Glory of Discovery,

for I am that which is hidden, secluded and forbidden.

Come to me at the Dark Moon

and see that which cannot be seen,

face the terror that is yours along.

Swim to me through the blackest oceans

to the center of your greatest fears-

the Dark God and I will keep you safe.

Scream to us in terror, and yours will be the Power to Forboear.

Think of me when you feel pleasure, and I will intensify it,

until the time when I may have the greatest pleasure

of meeting you at the Crossroads Between the Worlds.
